Rise and shine, everybody! It’s time to kick-start your day in the most magical way possible. And I have just the tool to help you do it – Mel Robbins’ 5 Second Rule for Getting Out of Bed. For those of us who are early risers, this can be a big deal and it has been game-changing for me.
Who is Mel Robbins?
Mel Robbins is an American self-help author who has inspired and motivated millions of people around the world. She is most well known for her book, The 5 Second Rule, which has helped countless individuals overcome procrastination and move towards their goals.
Her approach is simple yet powerful: count down from five and then take action. She is also the author of The High 5 Habit, which teaches readers how to use positive self-talk to boost confidence and productivity.
In addition to her books, Mel Robbins is a sought-after speaker and has appeared on numerous TV shows and podcasts. She is a true inspiration for me and anyone looking to make positive changes in their life.
Why The 5 second Rule Is Useful In The Morning
We all know what it’s like waking up in the morning groggy and disoriented, trying to just stay under the blankets and catch a few… 10… extra… minutes of sleep….😴. But will those few extra minutes of bedtime really add anything meaningful to the day? Nope! The opposite is actually true.
A couple of years back when I started my new morning routine, I often felt that the toughest part of our day was getting out of bed without snoozing. Mel Robbins 5 second rule for waking up turned out to be a helpful tool for me. It is so simple but it works.
Once you hear the alarm clock ringing, it takes just 5 seconds for you to make an internal decision whether you are going to hit snooze or get up and get ready for the day ahead.
Why five? Because making that split-second decision is incredibly powerful. Over time, these decisions start adding up. Starting your day with intention is powerful, and soon enough you’ll find yourself getting the results you want, while feeling great.
How Does The 5 Second Rule Help You Get Out Of Bed?
It works as follows: when you press the snooze button (hopefully only once!), begin counting back from 5 until 0. Once 0 is reached, make sure you are actually getting out of bed!
Not only has this simple technique helped me implement a powerful morning routine, but I also find myself using it in other beneficial ways.
The theory behind this is explained by “Mel Robbins” as: “If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it”.
So if you want to get out of bed first thing each morning, no matter how groggy you are, count down from 5 in your head and start moving when you get to zero. It drastically reduces the chances of hitting snooze and staying in bed for longer (which lets face it, usually happens!)
How Does The 5 second Rule Trick Your Brain?
By counting down from five, you’re essentially telling yourself “I’m about to do something” and it prevents your brain from telling you it’s okay to stay in bed… just 5 minutes more…
It works like that in all kinds of situations throughout the day. If you don’t act on a feeling or idea within five seconds, your brain might start to dissuade you. It wants you to stay in the safe zone and save energy, and it’s easier to go with the status quo.
Taking immediate action is key; less time for your mind to make excuses to not do something will lead to greater success. A simple movement can provide the motivation and energy required to achieve a goal.
This is why using the 5 second rule is an effective way of tricking your brain into taking necessary action towards achieving your goals. It’s a simple yet powerful technique that can set you up for success!
Before we know it, this small act of counting to five will become a habit. The 5 second rule allows us to engage in tasks that would usually be difficult for us by tricking our brains into taking the first step – the small action that eventually leads to bigger results.
